Yes, I said EDUPUNK. And yes, I did mean to shout it.

According to Wikipedia:

Edupunk is an approach to teaching and learning practices that result from a do it yourself (DIY) attitude.[1][2] The New York Times defines it as “an approach to teaching that avoids mainstream tools like PowerPoint and Blackboard, and instead aims to bring the rebellious attitude and D.I.Y. ethos of ’70s bands like The Clash to the classroom.”[3] Many instructional applications can be described as DIY education or Edupunk.

Jim Groom as “poster boy” for edupunk

The best thing about edupunk is that is doesn’t have any dystopian overtones. I was edupunk before our pal Jim Groom coined the phrase in 2008. I personally have been using the DIY approach for years. Mostly because formal education is generally expensive. With the advent of online learning the price is marginally more affordable, but tremendously more flexible for those of us with jobs, families, et cetera.

I came across this whole meme because my father Dr. Charlie Motzko as a PhD is now entering the academic world as an educator. I’ve been schooling him on the world of Web 2.0. He has taken up the mantle and has been drafted into presenting Web 2.0 concepts to the NCSLI.

As a web developer for a newspaper I am witnessing my industry slowly dying. This is due to a mindset that is technology adverse and ego centric. I see many similarities to the scientific and academic worlds. These industries must not shun new ways of doing business. In fact, embracing new technologies and philosophies can enhance and propel these businesses with the right forethought and planning.

I believe those that evangelize technology and innovate their fields with Web 2.0 concepts will see great growth in the near future. I think the hardest bit to overcome will be the mindset that “what we have belongs to us”, and “we need to get all the credit for our stuff”. The sharing of information and ideas will be paramount to all of these industries. D’Arcy Norman says,”It’s about a culture, a way of thinking, a philosophy”. Once we break down the barriers of exchange and allow the free exchange of ideas and information, we will see more growth.

After all my mom always said, “if you share you get twice as much”. Thanks mom.

Do you think traditional media, science and educators will change or perish? Do they have a choice?

<sup>
</sup>

Jerimiah Owyang (@jowyang) posted this link from #Blogher09. My hat is off to Brickfish and Coach for coming up with a way to encourage and engage younger new/potential clients.

Here is the link to the session at Blogher 09 from Jory Des Jardins.

It raises the point that any industry can benefit from being a bit creative. Seeing their product through the eyes of someone else allowed Coach to engage users it might never have reached, get great feedback and secure a relationship with a ton of new customers. My hat is off to the management of Coach for being able to listen and take a risk with something new.

I’m wondering if a model like this would work for the newspaper industry? Could newspapers ask 18-35 year olds what they would do if they created a newspaper? What would it look like? How would they engage?
What would be the perceived value to that group?

iPhone facts

iPhone is not a fad, neither was the iPod!

Kids have abandoned Nintendo ds for iPhone / iTouch

Native apps for iPhone have only existed since OCT 2008

Why is iPhone special?
1.Persistence
-connected all the time and know who and where you are

2.Mobile web

3.Application distribution
-iPhone app store just surpasses 1BILLION downloads and it has been open less that a year!

Q308 iPhone surpassed Blackberry and
beat out Razr as #1 consumer handset

37 million devices out there today

38k apps today most games and entertainment
1 in 3 are games and entertainment

Mobile web market share 70% globally for iPhone/iTouch

Apples secret weapon ~
user experience same on phone or desktop

Apple has beat out BlackBerry in enterprise market

Apple has innovated the market much like Google innovated search.

Market opportunity
Birth of new mobile platform
Native and web applications
Very early stages time to learn and create
Applications services accessories etc
Tremendous commercial opportunity

Johnson & Johnson has way to turn iPhone / iTouch to glucose meter and send info to parents or MD
This would be great for juvenile diabetics or rural patients!

Mobile apps will change the world.

Slowly seeing application prices rising.

Recommend that apps you develop be available to other languages to maximize 50% of market.

Independent talent will do well even in this economic climate. Success in the apps store will benefit from traditional marketing.

What will be the big deal with iPhone 3.0?
Accessories, data collection devices, car and stereo integration. Bluetooth will allow integration with other devices.

Tracking apps
Lots of good free analytic programs. Data is not exposed, but view of demo of users
pinchmedia, mobclicks eg
Add mobile analytic to any mobile app you develop.

Biggest challenges…
undervaluing QA don’t rush to get it out if it can be avoided

Any significant diffs from iPhone iTouch
iTouch slightly faster processor and thinner not as much storage

3.0 overview
mms will allow audio and biz cards over mms
flash is not part of os (flash lite rumored)
maybe a flash player app?
hardware accessories
commerce in games
peer to peer networking (multi player games)
embedded maps
developer.apple.com

How would you define smartphone in the enterprise.

iPhone became a battle ground. All about converting CIO’s and CFO’s.

Not really a top down approach to bringing these devices to the enterprise. A lot of folks bring their own and then adapt to business.

iPhone has changed how CIO’s behave. A paradigm shift in how we serve our organization. Embracing new devices in order to be more productive. CIO’s should be the leaders in the organization. Orgs are flexible and virtual due to these devices.

Device management
~started as consumer devices and now a business device. How do organizations manage multiple devices.

Security, how do we secure a device that is connected all the time from every location.
More consumer apps than business applications for iPhone currently. May be changing soon as demand increases. Oracle is working on several.

iPhone is a game changer due to acceptance and reliability.

Small and medium business markets will benefit from most of these apps due to cost and mobility.

Security concerns
There is risk if you want access to data. We’ve accepted it.
Risk exists on all devices usb/laptop/phone, you can’t isolate yourself and remain productive.
Expect to see more virtualization.

Everybody is mobile. As business has changed the demands to capture organize and retrieve dynamic data n a mobile environment are steadily increasing.
Mobile devices are now multi tools like swiss army knife or leatherman. We all want dynamic data. ie wikipedia
We have all gone mobile with our solutions to business and data now must be stored differently.

A primer on mobile marketing.
Its not business, its personal
Mobile experiences are temporal, location based, social, and most of all personal.
People have a relationship with their mobile devices.
New realm of personal

personal artifacts, credit card , bank, musical tastes
personal access, you can push personal info out to the world via twitter/facebook/ photos etc

Your iPhone is more than a phone, more like a wallet or backpack. Contains all kinds of info about you.
You don’t want uninvited guests in your personal space (adwords).
Mobile marketing rule
only come in by invitation

1. Leverage an existing relationship (bmw example)
2. Provide utility or value
3. Participate in social networks (jetblue example)

Personal connection is different in mobile space.
Be respectful.

1. What does each mobile platform offer from business perspective.

In 5 years there will be ton more people on mobile devices.
Nokia sell more smartphones that regular phones now. Consdered the largest camera manufacturer due to phones with cameras. Uses symbian. big market share.

Apps for iPhone work on iTouch.
Apple largest handheld gaming console.
Almost 1B downloaded apps.

Common experiences available from xbox/desktop/web/mobile

Open source has advantages with Android. Android has background tasks not available on iPhone. 8% of phones are Linux based.

2.What each app store doing as a strategy?

1/3rd of all apps are gaming. Content delivery upgrades coming with Apple 3.0
Android has 24 hr return policy.
MS marketplace shifting focus from enterprise to individual.
Nokia has most apps available. Symbian store debuts May09 will increase distribution. Store will support 85 devices.
RIM to increase apps, lots(100s) in development

Question about video capabilities on mobile, ie mobile video conferencing.
Rumor is Apple will have this summer
Front facing camera not likely. Feels invasive (bad hair days).
Carriers don’t really support the bandwidth needed for this technology.
Western Europe is using it now.
Thinks UStream will be most interesting place to see mobile video posted.

Q will cross platform apps be available?
Not available globally yet, many companies claim to offer solutions. Games and graphics not so much. Java apps most prolific
Sound great not really likely happen, every carrier, handset has different engineer, resolutions, chips.
Developers would love to develop for all devices and users, not likely to happen.
HTML tags and url schemes work well with lot of devices such as facebook mobile. Star withe target web app 1st then, top 5 devices
Not a lot of standards for mobile development

Q What about RIA for mobile?
Silverlight/Flash kinda limited at this point. Carriers have no incentive to update software for devices. Apple was clever to take back software in order to push updates. This may change with other carriers.
Flash is coming to Android. HTML5 will have lots to offer mobile
Symbian powered netbooks are on the way, with wifi/bluetooth.

Mobile phone browsers limit distribution.

Closing comments
Android with open source offers broad spectrum
Microsoft not attempting anything big.Next release wont’ come until it is ready. Zune phone unlikely. Focusing on user experience.
Exciting time. New developments abound. Monetization will be crucial.
Nokia has touchscreen music phone. Symbian os now open source. Many campaigns and services.
In 5yrs we’ll probably see the same platforms, but everything will be more personalized.

Thanks to the panel!

The app store is the surprise of 2008.
#1 web platform is iPhone SDK
Successful because open to anyone who signs agreement
entry cost $99 revenue split 70/30 few restrictions releases ever 2-3 weeks micro payments

Competitors rushing in for app piece of pie. Each one creates opportunities for companies.

State of mobile not all rosey. iPhone ahead in terms of monetizing apps. Lots of pressure to keep prices low. Most apps under $1.99.

App sales $32k spent vs. $536 revenue. Not a gold rush
Lots of throw away apps. no long term users. genrerally 1%.
Search is not as easy as it used to be. Harder to stand out from competitors.
iPhone is not the only part of the market.
Mobile apps need to consider lots of programming languages.

Google Maps
10+platforms to support
over 100 different bullds
pressure for rapid releases

You cant just build it and expect them to come. Anyone have a better cliche?
Still JG is optimistic about the market. more mobile devices than credit cards and tv’s in USA.
Mobile=Rapid convergence.
GPS phones probably outnumber gps units

BMW Germany turned $70k into $45m revenue
by sending mms text msgs to owners during first snow storm with personalize info (their car, color and tire) then details of option for tires and where you could purchase.
It is inspiring to see the different uses for this platform. Mobile is a very personal technology. 30% response rates to mobile advertising. Most likely the only technology that can change the world for the better. Can reach developing countries. Already helps for food distribution in Kenya.

Mobile technology galvanizes groups for protests against corruption.
One phone per child much more likely than one laptop per child.
